A Series of Unfortunate Events is based around the life of three siblings named Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire. The Baudelaire children are always moving from relative to relative because of a fire that had killed their parents. After their parents died they moved with Count Olaf who wants to take the Baudelaire fortune for himself which is meant to be obtained when Violet comes of age. Count Olaf has been disguising himself with his troop and has been following the Baudelaire children wherever they go ad killing their new guardians. Violet is 14 years old and is the oldest. She is the builder of the group where she has built many inventions to get them out of trouble with the help of Klaus and Sunny. Klaus is the middle child and he is 12 years old and is the bookworm of the group. Sunny is an infant who has very sharp teeth and helps out with cutting objects

An important part of the book is when Dorothy gets trapped in her house in the middle of a tornado with her dog Toto. This is an important scene because this is where Dorothy accidentally kills the Wicked Witch of the East by dropping her house on her. A Munchkin (the people in the town where dorothy appears in) thank her for killing the Wicked Witch of the East since they were now free from her abuse (22). Also Dorothy gets a pair of silver shoes which for killing the Wicked Witch of the East. Dorothy then meets The Witch of the North (good witch) who tells her that there is no way to return to her home. When all of a sudden she gets a message telling her to let Dorothy go to the City of Emeralds. The Great Wizard of Oz lives there and will help Dorothy get home back to her family. In the story The Wizard of Oz it states “The North is my home and its edge is the same great desert that surrounds this land of Oz. I’m Afraid my dear you will have to live with us.” It also say “At once the cap changed to a slate on which was written in big, white chalk marks: LET DOROTHY GO TO THE CITY OF EMERALDS.”
The main character is named Dorothy and lives with her Uncle Henry and Aunt Em. Dorothy has a pet dog named Toto that always keeps her company. Dorothy is a very cheerful child and is the only person in the great Kansas Prairies to be able to find joy in anything pretty much. The reason Dorothy is so cheerful is that her dog Toto who was a little black dog with long, silky fur, and little beady eyes, and a funny wee nose. In the The Wonderful Wizard of Oz on page 14 it states that Aunt Em once had a beautiful sparkle in her eyes and had red cheeks and lips but the sun and wind had taken those characteristics of her and now she was dull and gray (2). It also states on page 14, paragraph 2 that Uncle Henry had never laughed and never got a chance to experience real joy since he worked his entire life. The elderly couple were surprised each time that dorothy had laughed at anything since they did not see anything that they can enjoy around them anywhere. But on one faithful day a cyclone came and had ripped her house off the ground while dorothy was in it and was separated with her uncle and aunt where she had fallen asleep. When Dorothy had woken up she was in a very, strange place.
